Cornerstone of Southern California, Celebrating 40 Years
LGBTQIA2+ Community Support in Orange County

At Cornerstone, we are passionate about diversity and equality. However, we also understand that not everything works out equally. For example, Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) impact those within the LGBTQIA2+ community much more than those in the heterosexual population.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Substance Use Disorders impact 20-30% of the LGBTQIA2+ population, compared to 8.4% of the general population. If we want to try to help change these statistics, it is really important that we understand why this population is more likely to turn to substances than the general population.

Knowing why someone uses drugs and/or alcohol can help friends and family support their loved ones into and during recovery. For this reason, Cornerstone offers group education sessions about LGBTQIA2+ issues for both participants of their treatment programs, as well as family members as part of the family and couples therapy sessions.

Some of the most common reasons members of the LGBTQIA2+ community may turn to drugs include: being bullied; being discriminated against; feeling unsupported by friends and family and/or socially isolated. Any one of these issues on their own can cause an individual to turn to substances, however, often individuals within the LGBTQIA2+ community are struggling with more than one underlying cause. Suffering through such negative experiences in early life can also increase the possibility of a vulnerable individual developing a mental health condition such as depression or anxiety.

At Cornerstone, we understand that all individuals are unique, and therefore we will personalize treatment to a person’s specific conditions, addictions, and mental health disorders. However, we are also aware that people within the LGBTQIA2+ community will respond better to treatment if they are within an LGBTQIA2+ affirming treatment center, where other people have experienced the same issues as they have, and they are able to talk in groups dedicated specifically to LGBTQIA2+ issues.

What specialized services do we offer for people within the LGBTQIA2 Community?

We offer process groups that are specifically focused on gender and sexuality. These groups are split between LGBTQIA2+ members only and open groups where anyone who is curious about exploring these issues can join. We also allow partners and family members to participate in the open LGBTQIA2+ groups.
