What does “In-Network” really mean?
“In-network” substance abuse treatment centers, like Cornerstone, are providers who have contracted with your insurance company to accept certain negotiated rates. You will typically pay less with an in-network provider. The difference between in-network and out-of-network providers is that out-of-network providers are not contracted with a health insurance plan. So, if you visit a physician within your network, your cost will be less than if you go with an out-of-network provider. In most cases, insurance companies will pay less or not pay at all for services provided by an out-of-network provider. PPO, POS, and HMO plans make use of provider networks. “Out-of-network” providers have not agreed to the discounted rates.
Treatment centers that are out-of-network (those failing to meet Joint Commission certification and lacking credibility or relationships with insurance providers) may offer “no-cost” substance abuse treatment. However, they may then go on to use questionable billing practices that can create financial headaches for patients who need to focus on their recovery.
Is my insurance provider in-network?
To find out, go directly to your insurance carrier’s website and search the provider directory for your doctor’s name. If your doctor’s name shows on the website, that’s a good indication they accept your plan and they are in your plan’s network.
