Newport Coast, CA – On September 15, 2023, Michael Stone, M.D., founder of Cornerstone of Southern California, was awarded the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award by Acadia Healthcare / Sierra Tucson, for his 50-plus years of dedication to the field of alcohol addiction treatment and rehabilitation. The event took place at The Resort at Pelican Hill, in Newport Coast, California, where Dr. Stone was celebrated by his family, friends, and industry colleagues.
Dr. Stone’s journey began at Sheffield University School of Medicine, where he graduated with his MD in 1967. During his time at Sheffield, Dr. Stone volunteered for the VSO (the British equivalent to today’s Peace Corps), spending a year in a mission hospital in Uganda, East Africa. Following his service in the VSO and graduating, Dr. Stone became the Medical Director of the first addiction medical unit in a general hospital in the whole of Canada in 1969. Upon coming to California in 1976, he joined the University of California, Irvine, as an Assistant Professor, and then served as an Associate Professor in the University’s Department of Family Medicine.
While at the University of California, Dr. Stone worked as Medical Director at the Care Unit Hospital of Orange, an acute 106 bed psychiatric facility in Orange County, California, aiding with the detox and medical management of the hospital’s psychiatric patients. While there, he treated and became known to the primary founder (s) of the Betty Ford Center. Subsequently, he was asked to assist in the training of both the first, and second, Medical Directors of the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, California.
In 1984, Dr. Stone founded Cornerstone of Southern California, a premier mental health, drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility in Orange County, California after realizing that it was now possible to manage most patients who did not need acute hospitalization in a much more comfortable, safe, and significantly less expensive way.
“I am extremely hands-on with my work,” says Dr. Stone. “I strive to ensure that both myself, and the staff that work beside me at Cornerstone, are up to date with, and are implementing, all the most innovative and effective practices available.”
Over his lifetime, Dr. Stone has treated over 55,000 patients suffering from addiction and mental health issues, either directly or with the clinical teams he has directed. 25,000 of those patients, have been treated at Cornerstone under Dr. Stone’s care.
Dr. Stone has stated that since founding Cornerstone, his own family has grown alongside it, embracing it as an extension of their own family unit. As a grandfather to five grandchildren, his focus on providing high-quality, trusted treatment to other families has never wavered, and it continues to grow as Cornerstone grows. In his personal time, Dr. Stone is an avid sci-fi reader, enjoys spending relaxing days on the beach, and precious time with his family and furry friends.
