Co-Occurring Disorders
Co-occurring disorders is another term used to describe dual diagnosis. It refers to the presence of two or more conditions occurring together, most commonly a mental health disorder and a substance use disorder.
For example, someone may struggle with alcohol addiction while also experiencing depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder. These overlapping conditions can make recovery more complicated because untreated mental health symptoms may increase the likelihood of substance use, and substance use may intensify psychological distress.
Treatment for co-occurring disorders focuses on understanding how these conditions influence one another and developing strategies to address both simultaneously through therapy, education, and recovery planning.
