Cornerstone of Southern California is licensed and certified by the state of California and nationally accredited by the Joint Commission and located in sunny Orange County, CA. We believe that we provide the best clinically experienced staff and programs you will find. How do we know? Our clients tell us every day, and those that have been in other rehab centers say they wish they had come to Cornerstone first.

Our clinical director and founder, Michael Stone, MD, CADCII, has been helping addicts and families since 1969. He was the medical director of the 1st hospital-based alcohol and drug treatment center in Canada in 1969. Dr. Stone and his treatment team trained the first medical director and family program staff at the Betty Ford Center. Dr. Stone is a board-certified family physician, a diplomate of the American Pain Management Society, a certified alcohol and drug counselor II and is certified in addiction medicine.

The Cornerstone Primary Rehab Program

Relapse prevention is the focus of treatment at Cornerstone. What is addiction? Addiction is a complex brain disease characterized by compulsive drug seeking and abuse despite harmful consequences. We treat clients with all addictive chemical and alcohol problems. Prescription drugs for pain have become a serious problem for many individuals, Prescription sleeping pills and tranquilizers continue to be popular and usually need inpatient detox.

Detox from stimulants such as prescribed (Adderal, Ritalin) and "street" methamphetamine and cocaine is not as dangerous and is much easier with monitored medical help by a personal or independent physician.

Our program focuses on relapse prevention treatment. Everyone will have a strategy for their individual triggers when they leave. Our residential program is in a safe, supportive, home-like environment that enhances the recovery process.

The program includes therapeutic groups, lectures, written assignments, individual counseling, family involvement and “fun in recovery” activities.

The treatment plan is individualized for each client's specific needs. The continuing care plan is discussed early in treatment because of its importance. We believe in using holistic methods to treat the body, mind and spirit. Recovery from addiction requires a biological, psychological and social approach.

We belong to Gold's Gym and, when cleared by the doctor, our clients may go to the gym up to four times a week. We have other supervised outings, movies, Newport Beach boat rides, miniature golf, bowling and other fun activities relative to the time of year and weather.

We have separate houses for men and women. Only detox is co-ed. There are six residents per house. We include all meals and snacks and we provide a washer and dryer for your laundry. We offer 12-Step program involvement and provide transportation to local 12-Step meetings up to five times a week. We include continuing care and aftercare at no extra charge. There is no additional charge for our family programs, either. Our independent physicians also help our residents with co-occurring disorders.

We welcome clients from Anaheim, Fullerton, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Yorba Linda and surrounding locations.

Our former clients say it best...

  • Dr. Stone, I am so grateful to your program and also your generosity. I was a hopeless addict who believed there was no way of getting clean. Thanks to my sister and Cornerstone staff, I recently took my 90 day chip in N.A. Thanks, my life has been changed.

  • "This was the best foundation I could have asked for to be sober. My case manager was the Best!! She showed me your life can be exciting and sober."

  • It is the truly caring staff that makes Cornerstone the best rehab I have been to. The best part was finally getting my depression medications right, after many others tried for 2 years.

Addiction the Disease

How do you know if you have this disease?

How do you know if a loved one, a colleague, an employee, a friend, or your cellmate has this disease? There are endless definitions but here is mine. There are five pieces of the puzzle and all have to be present to be sure it is an addiction.

First - compulsion. This is not all the time, it is not every day but it is obvious. The cocaine addict gets the urge to use cocaine, the alcoholic craves a drink and the Vicodin addict is driven to get the pills. Addicts get the compulsion to do "it" (what they are addicted to) ...

Second - they do "it". I believe it is possible to be an... Read More »

Incidental Medical Services (IMS)

On January 1, 2016, Chapter 744, Assembly Bill 848 was enacted authorizing adult alcoholism or drug abuse recovery or treatment facilities that are licensed by the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) to provide IMS. AB 848 amends sections 11834.03 and 11834.36, and adds sections 11834.025 and 11834.026 to the Health and Safety Code to allow licensed residential providers the option to apply to DHCS for approval to provide IMS in their facilities.

IMS are services provided at a licensed residential facility by a health care practitioner that address medical issues associated with either detoxification or the provision of alcoholism or drug abuse recovery or treatment services to assist in the enhancement of treatment services. IMS does not include the provision of general primary medical care. IMS must be related to the patient's process of moving into long-term recovery.

The following six categories of IMS services may be provided after receiving approval from DHCS:

  • Obtaining medical histories.
  • Monitoring health status to determine whether the health status warrants transfer of the patient in order to receive urgent or emergent care.
  • Testing associated with detoxification from alcohol or drugs.
  • Providing alcoholism or drug abuse recovery or treatment services.
  • Overseeing patient self-administered medications.
  • Treating substance abuse disorders, including detoxification.
