What is Detox, Detoxification, Alcohol Detox, Drug Detox, Opiate Detox, Prescription Pill Detox, Alcohol withdrawal, detox medications? These are all questions that are asked by addicts who have found that they cannot stop using alcohol, drugs, or other medications.

Detoxification is not substance abuse treatment and rehabilitation. David Smith, M.D., said "When there is physical dependence, medical interventions may be needed to counter withdrawal symptoms and make full detoxification possible. The tools of detoxification include a pharmacopeia of medications that work to ease withdrawal symptoms and help the individual's system regain a healthy balance."

The definition of detoxification is: a set of interventions aimed at managing acute intoxication and withdrawal. It is a clearing of toxins from the body of someone who is acutely intoxicated and / or dependent on substances of abuse.

Detoxification seeks to minimize the physical harm caused by the abuse of substances. Supervised detoxification may prevent potentially life-threatening complications that might appear if the person was left untreated.
