Recovery isn’t ‘One size fits all’ – The problem with ‘real’ recovery

25 Oct

Is addiction a moral failure where the addict simply will not ‘choose’ to stop using drugs or alcohol? Is it still recovery if the addict is given medications to ease the process? What difference does it make if someone chooses to receive medication assisted treatment or chooses to push through the pain of withdrawals in the traditional 12 Step model?

We at Cornerstone believe that either path is an acceptable choice and that there shouldn’t be a stigma placed on those receiving medication assisted recovery. Finding lasting recovery from drugs and alcohol should be the main and ultimate goal of any form of treatment. The path is different for everyone. What does ‘real’ recovery actually mean? Cornerstone bolsters client safety with Narcan

12 Oct

We have all heard about the opioid epidemic that is gripping the nation. Overdose deaths stemming from heroin and other opiate abuses have surpassed automobile related fatalities for the first time in our history. It is past time to take action against this frightening trend.

Cornerstone will continue the fight against opioid abuse through our service to addicted individuals and will now also enlist the aid of a new medication called Narcan. Narcan is a nasal spray medication that can save the life of a person who has overdosed on opioids. This medication was approved by the FDA in 1971 and has been used to reverse opiate overdoses in emergency rooms and ambulances for decades. It is non-abusable and works within minutes to restore breathing in people overdosing on opiate drugs such oxycodone and heroin.

Cornerstone staff will be fully trained on when and how to administer this life saving medication in the rare case of an opioid overdose within our treatment system.

California Governor Jerry Brown signs overdose law

30 Sep

California Governor Jerry Brown has signed a new overdose law into effect which will increase naloxone access to pharmacies and individuals who need it. Pharmacists can now furnish this life-saving medication to an addict’s family members – those who may be in contact with someone at risk of an opiate overdose – or directly to the individual who is requesting it. The law will also require education and training for both the pharmacist and the consumer whenever this medication is distributed. To learn more – CLICK HERE.

How bad has the opioid epidemic truly become?

29 Sep

Did you know that drug overdoses now kill more people in this country than automobile accidents? The mere fact that this national crisis can be labeled as an ‘epidemic’ and where the Surgeon General has personally sent a letter to each and every physician warning them not to prescribe opiate medications to patients too easily should give you some gauge on the severity of this problem.

Cornerstone has been fighting the overwhelming tide of this epidemic even before it swelled to its extreme proportions. We understand addiction and are ready to help. To learn more about this crisis read on here.
